OVERVIEW
Armenia is an ancient country located on the southern slope of the Armenian Mountains in the Lesser Caucasus. It is bordered by Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. Its capital,Yerevan founded around 2800 yeards ago, is one of the oldest cities in the world.
Most of the old town was demolished in the 1930s and rebuilt to reach higher standards of public health. Its architecture is solid, sometimes imposing and essentially Soviet in style.
Lake Sevan, 70km (43 miles) east of Yerevan, is the largest lake in the Caucasus, highly praised for its pure waters, beautiful setting and delicious salmon trout.
Restaurants and nightclubs are nowadays increasing in number, mainly in Yerevan. Opera, theatre and ballet performances are inexpensive and of a high quality.
Local people are mainly Armenian Apostolic and their official language is Armenian. The country has hot summers and cold winters. Local specialties include lamb, either grilled and served as shashlik with flat bread, or prepared as soup (bozbash) or stew. Armenia's currency is the Dram.
