OVERVIEW
Capital of the state of Queretaro, this quaint city boasts well-preserved baroque churches, temples and mansions. The name Queretaro is believed to derive from the Purepechan word meaning 'site of the ballgame or place where there are rocks'.
The city played an important role in both the struggle for independence and the revolution: Mexico's Constitution was written and signed here.
Some of the city's main features are: an eight-kilometer aqueduct built in the 18th century; a fountain in the city's main square; the Plaza de Armas or Plaza de la Independencia, paying tribute to Don Juan Antonio Urrutia who financed the 12-year project (1726-38); the former San Agustin Monastery, now the Museum of Art; the former Convent of San Francisco, home to Queretaro's Regional Museum; and the Santa Clara and Santa Rosa de Viterbo, beautiful examples of baroque art.
Other points of interest include the Cerro de las Campanas, where Emperor Maximilian was executed in 1867, and the Casa de la Corregidora, home of independence heroine Dona Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez.
On the city's outskirts several important industrial companies have settled here, attracted by the central location and pleasant living conditions.
The city is also famous for its vineyards. Hildago is one of the most important regional products.
