OVERVIEW
Situated in the state of Michoacan, Patzcuaro lies 5 kms. south of the shore of Lake Patzcuaro. It is a beautiful town with impressive colonial architecture, lively native markets and a great Indian village atmosphere.
There are two central plazas and several smaller squares. Some attractions include the Museo Regional de Artes Populares, this is where Bishop Quiroga founded the first university on the American continent in 1540; and the Plaza Principal, with 17th century mansions, a central fountain and statue of Quiroga.
The second main plaza, the Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra, is where the colorful Mercado de Artesanias is found along with the Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin. Other colonial buildings include the Casa de los 11 Patios, Templo y Ex-convento Jesuita, and the Basilica Virgen de la Salud.
You can take a short boat ride to the island of Janitzio, an interesting native crafts and fishing village where a colossal statue of revolutionary hero Jose Maria Morelos can be found. You can also try fishing with butterfly nets in the lake's shallow waters.
