OVERVIEW
Located in the southeast of Mexico, the state of Oaxaca is a blend of beaches, mountains, forests and valleys as well as Precolombian archeological sites and colonial arquitecture.
There are 16 different groups that maintain their native languages and life styles in eight regions (Valles Centrales, Sierra Norte, Sierra Sur, Canada, Costa, Mixteca, region del Papaloapam and Istmo de Tehuantepec).
The city of Oaxaca (from the Zapotec word 'Huxyacac') is a small city with a historical center and whose main attractions are located in the area around the Zocalo. The city is characterized by its green stone colonial arquitecture.
The city was founded in 1529 by the Spanish conquistadors and built near Monte Alban, the prehispanic city where the Zapotec culture was developed in all of its splendor. Both centers are considered Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
