OVERVIEW
Merida, capital city of the state of Yucatan, is known as the White City because of the large use of white limestone and white paint in its Colonial buildings. It is a safe place to visit due to the warmth and friendliness of its people.
A great way to get to know the city is on foot (if you are in relatively good shape, of course). You can find extraordinary regional dishes and traditional music and dances from this region in restaurants, theatres and shops located both near the main plaza and in magnificent mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard resembling Paris' Champs Elysee. If you are interested in museums, do not miss visiting the Museum of Modern Art as well as the Museum of the Music of Yucatan. Last but not least, Merida also welcomes tourists visiting the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, where the amazing Castle of Kukulcan is located.
Progreso, Merida's port city, is 30 kilometers north and offers the possibility of watching salt-flats and flamingos. You can access the city by charter flights or a four-hour bus ride from Cancun. There are also two highways connecting Cancun and Merida as well as many roads from Tulum.
Some tips to take into consideration: there is a lot of traffic, especially downtown; taking the local bus can be difficult if you do not speak Spanish, you should be careful because most of the streets are one-way and the bus routes make a lot of turns; it is not easy to find a hotel with a swimming pool (this is vital during the summer months) so you should inquire before booking.
