OVERVIEW
Guadalajara is Mexico's second-largest city and the capital of the state of Jalisco. It has experienced a population explosion as a result of the devastating 1985 earthquake in Mexico City and the rural poor striving for employment.
The city boasts magnificent churrigueresque architecture as well as tree-lined boulevards, parks, and plazas.
Guadalajara is also known for being one of Mexico's most socially traditional and politically conservative cities. Tapatios, as the city's inhabitants are called, even seem to be proud of their straight and narrow point of view.
Some of Mexico's finest and most popular traditional crafts and folk art are produced in the suburbs of Tlaquepaque. Some other places of interest include Lago de Chapala (Lake Chapala), Mexico's largest body of fresh water; and the nearby towns of Chapala and Ajijic.
