OVERVIEW
Located in a secluded bay on the south coast of England, Bournemouth is an enjoyable resort town which has become one of the UK's leading tourist destinations. The town of Bournemouth did not exist before the 19th century, even as a village, although there is archeological evidence that people have lived nearby for a thousand years.
At present, Bournemouth has a population of around 150,000 and has turned into a favourite location for business as well as leisure travel. It has seven miles of beautiful white sandy beaches which fly three blue flags as a testimony of the quality of the water for bathing and the safety and cleanliness of the beaches. It has the most varied tourist attractions, a vast array of places to stay, from fantastic four star hotels to pretty guest houses and self catering accommodation.
Bournemouth is world famous for its clean and green resort and one of Europe's more chic holiday destinations. It has more than 2000 acres of beautiful green parks and gardens and has won Britain in Bloom and Entente Florale. It also has some of Britain's finest weather with sunny summers and mild winters, attracting more than five and a half million visitors annually.
There are over 300 restaurants and bistros, as well as cafes and pubs, offering a whole selection of international cuisine, from American and Swiss to Lebanese, Thai and Mexican, combined with good old traditional English meals. There are plenty of night clubs for disco, jazz, comedy and dance audiences. Bournemouth has three main theatres for a variety of audiences and presenting a wide range of shows including musicals, plays and international concert tours. Bournemouth even has its own internationally famous Symphony Orchestra, which occasionally tours around Britain and abroad.
Bournemouth is a relatively new university town as the polytechnic college obtained university status in 1992. It is mainly strong in the fields of hospitality management, computer technology, tourism, and business studies. Bournemouth is also a favourite site for learning English and therefore has a large number of students from around the world attending each year.
