OVERVIEW
Basildon started in 1950 after some local opposition. It has one of the biggest pedestrianised areas in the country that covers much of the town centre. There are two major shopping centres: Eastgate and Westgate. There is also a theatre with occasional art exhibitions, pubs and clubs, a multi-screen cinema, and bowling. For those who enjoy open air, there is the Wat Tyler Country Park in Pitsea Hall Lane, with 125 acres of woodland, meadows, and grasslands with a Motorboat Museum, a play area and cafe. The Motorboat Museum shows the history of motorboats from early steam launches to modern offshore powerboats. Other sites worth visiting are the Langdon Visitor Center and Nature Reserve on Third Avenue, Lower Dunton Road.
