OVERVIEW
Cardiff, capital of Wales, is a modern, coastal city surrounded by the magnificent Welsh countryside. It is rapidly growing into one of Europe's best maritime cities.
Cardiff Bay has lately been significantly redeveloped. A lagoon has recently been built. The old "smokestack" industries do not longer exist, now new offices and government establishments have appeared, including the Welsh Assembly, voted for by the Welsh in a referendum in 1997 in order to be governed from Cardiff instead of from the House of Commons in London.
Cardiff has an agreeable village atmosphere, though it is only 10 or 15 minutes from the city centre by car or public transport. It is a university city, kept active and lively the whole year by the 25,000 students living near the center. The University has some of the city's prettiest and most fantastic buildings and one of the largest, most active students' unions in Britain.
The Civic centre is famous world wide for its government offices, law courts, museum and the university campus and is an amazing site to visit. One of the main buildings housed is City Hall, where the European Council was held in June 1998.
Cardiff Castle, with its Roman and Norman fortifications and magnificently rebuilt 19th century lodgings can be found in the heart of the city. The Welsh Regiment Museum and The Queen's Dragoon Guards Museum also sit on the castle grounds..
A wide range of cultural activity with music and drama being most popular can be found in Cardiff. It is also a festival city and, amongst others, hosts a month long street festival in the summer, "Music in the Bay" events and the well established "Cardiff Singer of the World" competition held in St David's Hall. It was the host of the 1999 Rugby World Cup Final at the awe inspiring Millennium Stadium, with a sliding roof, not far from the other attractions of the city centre. Sporting activities and facilities have increased and, apart from having Rugby as its most popular entertainment form, it is also the home of a top British ice hockey team.
There are parks and leisure gardens famous all around the worls, including Bute Park and Roath Park and Lake, some of which stretch right up to the shopping area in the city centre, and are visited by tourists as well as locals. Tourists staying in Cardiff can live an unforgettable experience, with fairy-tale castles, awesome mountains, luxurious valleys and fabulous coastline all within easy reach by various methods of transport.
