Aberdeen City has had a separate local government since 1996 when new unitary local authorities were established under local government reform. The City's coat of arms is said to date from the time of King Robert the Bruce and the massacre of English troops in the neighbourhood. Its motto - 'Bon Accord' - is said to have been the watchword to initiate the campaign and the arms depict three castles standing on three hills around which Aberdeen grew, particularly Castle Hill, the Port or Windmill Hill (Gallowgate) and St. Catherine's Hill. Robert the Bruce gave his hunting lands on the forest of Stocket to the residents of Aberdeen. These 'Freedom Lands' produced income that was later used for the creation of the city's Common Good Fund.
