OVERVIEW
Neuquen is a province with a wide variety of places to visit. In Lanin National Park you can admire local flora species such as the pehuen or araucaria, cypress, coihue, rauli (evergreen beech) and nire (an Antarctic beech). Huemuls (type of deer), pumas, foxes and pudus (the smallest deer in the world) can also be found in this park.
Sailing trips to lakes Lacar and Nonthue begin in San Martin de los Andes, an alpine-like town. There are also walking tours leaving from Junin de los Andes, to Lake Huechulafquen and Lake Paimun, located at the foot of volcano Lanin.
The Seven Lakes Route consists of 200-Km. joining San Martin de los Andes with San Carlos de Bariloche passing by snow-covered peaks and natural forests. The seven lakes are Machonico, Hermoso, Villarino, Falkner, Correntoso, Espejo and Nahuel Huapi.
Villa La Angostura lies on the shores of the lake Nahuel Huapi and it is only 10 km away from Los Arrayanes National Park.
Los Arrayanes National Park features hundred year-old trees, which can reach more than 20 meters high. It is said that Walt Disney was inspired by this astonishing place when he made the movie "Bambi".
Naked cypresses can be found in Bosque Sumergido (Immersed Forest). Valle Encantado (Enchanted Valley) is a vast area with eroded rocks of unique shapes.
Other places of interest include Villa Traful, on the coast of lake Traful; Caviahue, next to lake Agrio or Caviahue; Copahue, with thermal waters from its volcano; Alumine, on the shores of the lake of the same name, and Chos Malal, with remains of old native settlements. Thermal waters are also found in Termas de Domuyo and Termas de Epulafquen.
Aventure lovers can enjoy trekking, rafting, canoeing, horse riding, hiking or mountain-biking. There are photographic safaris and camping. Bird-watching is available at Laguna Blanca National Park and sailing trips across lakes Lacar and Nonthue. The ski season runs from June to September. In the winter resorts, such as Chapelco, Cerro Bayo and many others, it is possible to practise alpine and cross-country skiing. Hunting deer and wild boar as well as fishing trout are also very popular in this region.
Neuquen is famous for its knitted fabrics, shawls, colorful bedspreads and girdles as well as regional ponchos.
