OVERVIEW
The word 'Iguazu' means 'big water' in the Guarani language. This term refers to the 275 waterfalls in the shape of a half moon which flow over a drop of 70 meters. One of the main features is the Garganta del Diablo (The Devil's Throat), where water creates dense clouds of spray which form multiple rainbows. The Iguazu Falls, which have been declared World Heritage by the UNESCO, are part of the Iguazu National Park.
The Jesuit ruins lie on Misiones' red earth. In the 17th century, the Jesuits settled in this region by creating missions which made it possible to merge the native and European cultures without the use of force. The most important ones are those of San Ignacio Mini. Other Jesuit ruins: Candelaria, Loreto, Santa Ana and Santa Maria. Visitors can find carvings from the Jesuit missions in the Regional Museum in Posadas.
Posadas, linked to the Paraguayan city of Encarnacion through a modern bridge, is the capital city.
Montecarlo, where the National Orchid Festival is held; Obera, seat of the National Immigrant Festival; and Bernardo de Irigoyen, land border with Brazil, are other places of interest.
Visitors can enjoy trekking in the jungle of the Iguazu National Park and in Saltos del Mocona. Fishing is available at Montecarlo, Puerto Esperanza and Puerto Rico. Some of the local fish include the dorado, the manguruyu, the surubi and the pacu. There are also visits to mate plantations and drying sheds.
The region is famous for its basketwork, ceramics, wood carvings as well as semi-precious stones which include agate, quartz, amethyst found in Wanda and Libertad Mines.
Transportation: Fights from Buenos Aires to Posadas and Puerto Iguazu. By bus from the City of Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Rosario to Posadas and Puerto Iguazu. There is a frequent service between Posadas, San Ignacio and Puerto Iguazu and permanent service from Puerto Iguazu to the falls and Foz do Iguazu (Brazil), with a connection to Ciudad del Este (Paraguay).
