OVERVIEW
Well-known for its clean, tree-lined streets and irrigation channels, this lively city has a cultural life of its own including universities, theatres, museums and art galleries.
From Valle de los Horcones visitors can admire the south-east face of 6,959 m high mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the western hemisphere. Further north, marking the pass Paso de la Cumbre and the tunnel that leads to Chile, there lies the statue of the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer).
Other places of interests are San Rafael, economic capital of southern Mendoza, and the Canon del Rio Atuel; Malargue and Cueva de las Brujas (Witches' Cave); Laguna de Llancanelo and the volcanic region of Payun Matru; Uspallata and Puente del Inca (Inca Bridge); Tunuyan and Tupungato.
Las Lenas ski resort boasts of having the best snow quality. It has 40 slopes and offers skiers 63 Km for Alpine, Nordic and extreme skiing. Its base lies 2,256 m above sea level and its maximum height is 3,430 m. Visitors should not worry about transport since ski-lifts are very close to the hotels. Other ski resorts include Penitentes and Vallecitos.
Adventure lovers can practise hang-gliding, canoeing and windsurfing. Rafting is available at the Mendoza, Diamante and Atuel rivers. Mountaineering, trekking and trips on horseback through the Andes mountain range (Cerro Aconcagua, Valle de Los Molles, and Las Lenas) are also some of the activities the region offers. This region is ideal for fishing, mainly salmon and pejerrey.
Don't miss visiting one of the famous Mendoza wine cellars. The most important celebration is the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia- a fiesta which celebrates the grape harvest and is held at the end of February and the beginning of March. There are thermal spas in Cacheuta, El Challao and Los Molles. The casinos are located in Mendoza, San Rafael and Las Lenas.
Mendoza is famous for its sashes, large and small shawls, coverlets, sheepskin saddle blankets, cushions, reed basketwork and last but not least its excellent wines.
