New Caledonia is an island cluster lying about 1500km off the northeast coast of Australia. The terrain is mainly mountainous. The east coast has numerous mountains and beautiful seashores with tropical plants. The land in the western side is flatter and forested by gum trees. Half of the island's territory is covered by crystalline serpentine rock.
About 48km southeastwards lies Ile des Pins (Kunie), an island which is famous for its caves and grottoes containing stalactites and stalagmites. The Loyalty Group is located to the east of New Caledonia: Lifou, Mare and Ouvea are the main islands in this group. Other islands are the Chesterfield Group, Hunter, Huon Group, Matthew and Walpole.
