OVERVIEW
Guam, the largest island in Micronesia, is the most cosmopolitan and energetic due to the large US Naval presence.
Agana, the capital, has many historic buildings dating from the time of Spanish rule for 333 years. There are also some places of interest built during the Spanish colonial period and the relics of the Chamorro period (a culture which remains alive at present, though much modified). There are also many outdoor and water recreation activities for those who enjoy being in the open air.
The main tourist center is Tumon Bay, just up the coast from Agana. Fine coral reefs around the coast can be seen. The interior is mountainous, particularly in the south. There are several magnificent cliffs on the north coast.
There are three botanical gardens in Guam: the Inarajan Shore Botanical Garden by the sea in the southern part of the island; the Nano Fall Botanical Gardens in Agat, where you can swim in the Nano River under the cascades; and the Pineapple Plantation in Yigo.
The South Pacific Memorial Park in Yigo commemorates the people killed in World War II and the War in the Pacific. National Historical Park is the location of five World War II battle sites; visitors can find war photos and relics there. There is another smaller museum in Guam with sections dedicated to natural history and Chamorro culture.
As most tourists to Guam are Japanese, many sites commemorate the war. Other parks include Latte Park, found at the bottom of Kasamata Hill; and Merizo Pier Park, with recreational facilities for watersports and the location of the annual Merizo Water Festival.
Beach parks include Talofofo Bay Beach Park, situated at the mouth of the Talofofo River; and Ipao Beach Park, once the location of an ancient Chamorro settlement, later a prison and leper colony, and now one of Guam's most popular recreational sites.
Guamanian people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is English. The country has a warm, humid climate with a dry season (January to June) and a rainy season (July to December). Guam's currency is the US Dollar.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Guam: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 120 Volts and the country code is 671.
