OVERVIEW
Vanuatu lies in the Southwest Pacific forming an incomplete double chain of islands which spread north to southeast for some 900km (560 miles). The chains, together with Banks and Torres islands, are composed of about 40 mountainous islands and 40 islets and rocks. The islands have five active volcanoes.
Vanuatu's unspoilt natural beauty and its rich cultural heritage attract those seeking adventure. The islands of Efate, Tanna and Espiritu Santo are the main tourist centers.
The capital, Port-Vila, is on Efate Island. Its Cultural Centre boasts one of the most extensive Pacific artefact collections in the world. A great number of opportunities are available for those who enjoy watersports. There are several nightclubs with music and dancing in Port-Vila. You can also go on evening cruises organised with wine, snacks and local music.
On Pentecost Island during April and May, you can see men performing the ritual leap (Naghol) to ensure a generous yam harvest: they tie vines to their ankles and leap from a tower, falling head first. The vine saves them from death.
Local people are mainly Christian and their official languages are Bislama, English and French. Vanuatu has a tropical climate. The country's currency is the Vatu.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Vanuatu: the electricity runs on 230 Volts and the country code is 678.
