OVERVIEW
Situated on the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus is an island of jagged coastlines, sandy beaches, rocky hills and forest-covered mountains. The capital of the country is Nicosia, which is situated at the island's heart. There are many enchanting and ancient shops here. To the west Nicosia District streches to the vine region on the Troodos Mountains, where magnificent forests and valleys feature hill resorts such as Kakopetria and Byzantine churches in Galata. Limassol is the island's main port and centre of the wine industry.
Cypriot people are mainly Greek Orthodox and their official languages are Greek and Turkish. The country has hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Cyprus' currencies are the Cypriot Pound and the Turkish Lira. National dishes include kebabs (lamb or other meat skewered and roasted over a charcoal fire) and dolmas (vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice).
Some tips to take into account when visiting the country: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 240 Volts and the country code is 237.
