OVERVIEW
Situated in Eastern Europe, between Greece and Romania, Bulgaria is crossed by the Balkan Mountains and covered with forests and rivers.
The Black Sea resorts, considered to be some of the finest in Europe, can be visited all year round: in summer, relax at their beaches whereas in winter, enjoy their mountain ski tracks. The capital of the country is Sofia, featuring buildings in many architectural styles including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Turkish. The city is well known for its theatres and museums, opera houses and art galleries. Opera is performed at the State Opera House in Sofia. Some other important cities are Plovdiv and Varna.
Bulgarian people are mainly Eastern Orthodox and their official language is Bulgarian. The country has mild summers and cold, snowy winters. The country's currency is the Lev. National dishes include cold yoghurt soup with cucumbers and peppers or aubergines stuffed with meat.
