OVERVIEW
Situated between Poland and Russia, Belarus is a country covered by forests and lakes, rich in wildlife and crossed by rivers such as the Dnieper. The capital of the country is Minsk, where little of the old city survives with the exception of a few 17th-century buildings. The modern part of the city features wide embankments on the Svisloch River. It has an exciting cultural life with opera, ballet (the Belarusian Ballet), theatre, puppet theatre, a circus as well as the National Museum of Belarusian History and Culture. Local dishes include dracheny, a tasty potato dish with mushrooms; draniki, served with pickled berries, while the favourite drink is the chai (black tea).
Belarusian people are mainly Eastern Orthodox and their official languages are Belarusian and Russian. The country has cold winters, cool and wet summers. The country's currency is the Belarusian Ruble.
