OVERVIEW
Situated in Central Europe, the Slovak Republic achieved independence in 1993 and is slowly opening up to tourism. The country is divided into three regions: Bratislava and the West, Central Slovakia including the mountains, and The East. In addition to the Alps, the landscape ranges from the Danube plain to high mountain peaks and quiet valleys, glacial lakes with crystal-clear waters to mineral and thermal springs. There are 7 national parks and 16 protected landscape areas, featuring well-preserved natural environments, the unique Carpathian landscape and remains of the original virgin forests.
Slovak people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is Slovak. The country has temperate summers and cold, humid winters. The country's currency is the Slovenska Koruna or Slovak crown.
