OVERVIEW
Georgia lies between the Black Sea to the west and close to the Caspian Sea to the east. Mountain ranges cover eighty percent of the land: mainly the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains to the south. Between these mountains and land-locked seas stretch a narrow belt of fertile lowlands that form main east-west and north-south routes between Europe and Asia.
Throughout the ages, Greeks, Romans, Parthia, Byzantium, Khazars, Arabs, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Persians, the Ottoman Turks and more recently the Russians have tried to control the Georgian kingdom and even at present, a power struggle continues as the West tries to reach the vast oil reserves of the Caspian region.
People are nowadays living great economic adversities similar to those of pre-independent times. However, though no one knows what is in stock for them, Georgia is certainly capable of realizing this dream of independence thanks to its natural resources and strong national identity.
Georgia possesses an unusual diversity of physical beauty relative to its small size. Visitors can travel from the semi tropical beaches of the Black Sea coast to the snow capped Caucasus Mountains and the grassy steppes of the Yori Plateau in a single day. However, it is worth taking your time to admire the distinctive views, traditions and architecture of each area.
Local people are mainly Georgian Orthodox and their official language is Georgian. The country has hot summers and mild winters. Georgia's currency is the Lari.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Georgia: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 995.
