OVERVIEW
Bangladesh is located in the north-eastern part of south Asia. It is surrounded by magnificent geographical boundaries: the great Himalayas to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the south, the vast plains of India (West Bengal) to the west and the almost impenetrable forest of Myanmar (Arakan Province) and India (Tripura and Assam hills).
The land of Bangladesh is crossed by many brooks, rivers and streams. It is mostly flat except for a range of hills in the south-east. Wooded marsh lands and jungles with forested regions in Sylhet, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban Hill Tracts, Sundarbans, Mymensingh and Tangail give Bangladesh a character of its own.
Bangladesh is one of the most heavily populated countries world wide. It occupies the delta where the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, and their tributaries, drain into the Bay of Bengal. The soggy environment creates usable but unstable land that is bound to seasonal monsoons and floods.
Bangladesh's tourist attractions include archaeological sites, historic mosques and monuments, resorts, beaches, picnic spots, forest and wildlife. Bangladesh provides visitors with opportunities for angling, water-skiing, river cruising, hiking, rowing, surfing, yachting and sea-bathing as well as a close contact with mother nature. Its wildlife is also rich and interesting.
Bangladeshi people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Bengali. The country has hot, humid summers and cool winters. Bangladesh's currency is the Taka.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Bangladesh: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 880.
