OVERVIEW
Uzbekistan borders with Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The capital, Tashkent, is located in the valley of the River Chirchik. The Tien-Shan and Pamir-Alai mountain ranges lie in the south and east and the Kyzyl Kum Desert lies in the northeast. The city was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1966 but the new buildings lack architectural interest.
Samarkand, founded over 5000 years ago, developed until the 16th century. The centre of the historical town is the Registan Square dominated by three huge Islamic seminaries, which include Shir-Dor and Tillya-Kari - built between the 15th and 17th centuries.
Bukhara, lying on the west of Samarkand, was once a centre of learning well known throughout the Islamic world. More than 350 mosques and 100 religious colleges can be found in this city. The centre of historical Bukhara is the Shakristan, which contains the Ark, or palace complex of the Emirs.
Tashkent offers a varied range of theatres showing everything from European operas to traditional Uzbek dances and music.
Local people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Uzbek. Uzbekistan has long, hot summers and mild winters. The country's currency is the Uzbekistani sum.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Uzbekistan: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 998.
