OVERVIEW
Both ancient and modern styles can be found in Bahrain, an archipelago of 33 islands lying in the Arabian Gulf. Islamic art, culture and architecture sit side by side with skyscrapers.
The capital city, Manama, is peculiarly couloured by a Manhattan-style skyline. The marketplace (souk) is located in the center of the old town. Those tourists interested in Bahrain's past cannot miss the A'ali Burial Mounds (the world's largest cemetery). The House of Al Jasra (birthplace of the Amir, the ruler of Bahrain) and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque (Bahrai's largest mosque) are among other traditional places worth visiting. Other type of entertainment is offered by long stretches of sandy beaches and coral reefs. Al Jazair being the best and largest beach.
The food is spicy and strongly flavoured. The main meat is lamb, but chicken, turkey and duck are also served. The most common drinks are Arak (grape spirit flavoured with aniseed) and beer. The main towns provide visitors with city life attractions such as restaurants, nightclubs and cinemas.
Local people are mainly Shi'a and Sunni Muslim and their official language is Arabic. The country has mild, pleasant winters and hot, humid summers. Bahrains currency is the Nahraini Dinar.
