OVERVIEW
Situated on the East China Sea, the island of Taiwan is a land where modern culture and tradition have found a way of coexisting in the same country without blending.
Visitors can indulge themselves in the most beautiful unspoiled mountain ranges, visit ancient temples and live a unique experience in tiny rice farming villages.
The modern Taiwan, however, consists of enormous smog filled cities and factories. Taiwan has developed rapidly thanks to its drammatic industrial growth.
Visitors can one day trek through foothills or visit Buddhist monuments and shop or enjoy the nightlife in one of the country's bustling towns on the next.
More than 18 million, the "native" Taiwanese are descendants of Chinese who migrated from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces on the mainland, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. The "mainlanders," who arrived on Taiwan after 1945, came from all parts of mainland China.
Taiwanese people are mainly Buddhist and their official language is Mandarin Chinese. Taiwan has a tropical climate with a monsoon season (June to August). The country's currency is the New Taiwan Dollar.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Taiwan: the electricity runs on 110 Volts and the country code is 886.
