OVERVIEW
Qatar lies into the Gulf between Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. It is an oil-rich peninsula which consists of sand dunes and salt flats.
The city of Doha has a blend of traditional Arabic and modern architecture. Worth visiting buildings include the Grand Mosque with its many domes and the Abu Bakir al-Siddiq Mosque. The north hosts most of the historic places, including Umm Salal Mohammed, a relatively big village still dominated by the ruins of a 19th-century fort.
Al Khor is the second-largest city, located around a natural harbour. Fine sandy beaches like Umm Bab (The Palm Tree Beach) Dukhan and Salwah can be found on the west coast. The south is a region of sand dunes and beaches, where you can go pearl hunting or practice watersports.
Qatari people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Arabic. Qatar has a dry desert climate. The country's currency is the Qatari Rial.
