Pakistan borders Afghanistan, India, Iran and the Arabian Sea. Its land varies from mountainous to flat, alluvial plains.
Located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, Karachi is the largest city and has numerous restaurants, teahouses and juice stalls making the streets lively. Visitors can hire boats to sail out of the harbour.
Lahore, situated in the Punjab, is a historic, busy city with buildings of pink and white marble. Some of its attractions include bazaars, the Badshahi Mosque (one of the largest mosques in the world and an example of Moghul architecture).
Islamabad (capital of Pakistan since 1963) and Rawalpindi are both situated on the Pothowar Plain. Fine examples of local architecture and narrow streets filled with bazaars where craftsmen still use traditional methods can be found in the old part of the town. The Northern Areas has some of the highest mountains in the world.
The Pakistani Arts Academy provides cultural programmes of traditional music and dance at various times during the year.
Pakistani people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Urdu. Pakistan has a hot, dry desert climate. Local specialties include curry or masala (hot and spicy) sauces accompanying chicken, mutton, shrimps and a wide choice of vegetables. The country's currency is the Pakistani Rupee.
