Situated to the northeast of Thailand, Laos is at present becoming one of the main, largely unknown areas of the world for visitors to exotic places. There are treasures everywhere in Laos, from the many beautiful wats, already declared national treasures, to the forgotten fire hydrants in Vientiane. The capital of Laos, which lies on the bank of Mekong river, is an appealing city full of ancient temples, pretty gardens and magnificent museums. Interesting places here are Wat Prakeo, National Museum and Wat That Luang, Wat Sisaket and the Central Market. The architecture and cuisine of Vientiane has been clearly influenced by the French.
Laotian people are mainly Buddhist and their official language is Lao. The country has a tropical climate with a rainy season (from May to November) and a dry season (from December to April). Laos' currency is the Kip.
