OVERVIEW
Situated in Central Asia, to the north of China, Kazakhstan boasts desert scenery and flat neverending plains, interrupted by isolated cities, many of which are industrial wastelands.
The plains are broken by sharply rising foothills and high mountains along the country's eastern and southeastern fringes, where the best attractions lie.
At present, the country's biggest promise can be found below the desolate desert scenery - Kazakhstan's oil and gas reserves make it potentially the richest of the republics in the region. However, Kazakhstan is now experiencing energy shortages in Almaty, a surprisingly cosmopolitan city, as well as in the remote countryside.
Local people are mainly Sunni Muslim and their official languages are Kazakh and Russian. The country has cold winters and hot summers. Kazakhstan's currency is the Tenge.
