OVERVIEW
The Turks & Caicos are an archipelago of more than 30 islands which form the southeastern end of the Bahamas chain. There are two main groups of islands, both surrounded by an uninterrupted coral reef: Caicos, the larger group, includes Providenciales, Middle (or Grand) Caicos, and the islands of North, South, East and West Caicos, plus a number of small cays, some of which are not populated. The Turks group, separated by a 35km-wide (22-mile) channel of water, is made up of Grand Turk, Salt Cay and some small uninhabited cays.
The Turks & Caicos Islands are a magnificent destination for those who are seeking a peaceful spot to forget about it all. There are wonderful national parks, nature preserves, sanctuaries, pristine white-sandy beaches, and historical places.
Local people are mainly Baptist and their official language is English. The country has a tropical, sunny and dry climate. Local dishes include whelk soup, conch chowder (stew), lobster and a number of fresh fish. The islands' currency is the US Dollar.
