OVERVIEW
The islands of Trinidad & Tobago lie off the Venezuelan coast. Port of Spain, the capital city, hosts the Northern Range of mountains. On the north and east coasts lie magnificent beaches.
Port of Spain, surrounded by hills covered by abundant vegetation, is the center of oil-rich Trinidad. Bazaars sit side by side with modern skyscrapers and mosques with cathedrals.
San Fernando, the island's second town, is the main commercial centre in the south. Pitch Lake, a 90-acre (36.4 hectares) lake of asphalt lies nearby. Trinidad offers a diverse and attractive nightlife which include nightclubs with calypso, limbo dancers and steel bands.
Tobago lies 32km (20 miles) away from Trinidad. It is a quiet island with a calm sea and some beautiful beaches, each of them having their own definite style. They include Pigeon Point on the southwest coast and Buccoo Reef, a vast coral reef, lying offshore.
Visitors can enjoy good snorkeling there and can go sightseeing in glass-bottomed boats. Local dishes include ). In Tobago, the main Calypsonians from Trinidad travel over to perform at Shaw Park, Scarborough and Roxborough.
Local people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is English. The country has a tropical climate with a rainy season (June to December). Local specialties include quenk (wild pig) and pastelles (meat folded into cornmeal and wrapped in a banana leaf). The islands' currency is the Trinidad and Tobago Dollar.
