OVERVIEW
St. Kitts and Nevis, known as the sister islands, have much to offer to its visitors: quiet beaches, abundant rain forests, historic ruins; charming though a little neglected capitals in Basseterre (St. Kitts) and Charlestown (Nevis), and rebuilt 18th-century plantation inns.
St. Kitts was the first English settlement in the Leeward Islands. It possesses the most fabulous natural and historical attractions: a rain forest teemed with waterfalls, thick vines, and secret paths; a central mountain range dominated by the Mt. Liamuiga, whose crater has long been dormant; and Brimstone Hill.
Nevis is known for its long magnificent beaches with white and black sand, lush green lands, and its much sought for restored sugar plantations now turned into charming inns. Though there's a wide range of attractions for the energetic including mountain climbing, swimming, horseback riding, rain-forest walks and snorkeling, the quiet ones can enjoy the hammocks for snoozing and candlelit dinners.
St. Kitts and Nevis, along with Anguilla, achieved self-government as an associated state of Great Britain in 1967. In 1983 St. Kitts and Nevis became an independent nation. The sister islands may separate someday, but meanwhile they only wage war in speeches, ad campaigns, and political chat.
Local people are mainly Anglican and their official language is English. The country has a hot and tropical climate with a hurricane season (August to October). The islands' currency is the East Caribbean Dollar.
Some tips to take into account when visiting St. Kitts & Nevis: the electricity runs on 230 Volts and the country code is 869.
