OVERVIEW
Paraguay is a landlocked country bordered by Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil. It lies some 1440km (900 miles) up the River Parana from the Atlantic.
The River Paraguay, a tributary of the Parana, separates the country into two different regions. To the east, where the River Parana forms a natural border with Brazil, there are rolling hills, fertile plains, grasslands and wooded regions. To the west, the almost inhabited Chaco area which consists mainly of empty plains and forests hosts hundreds of wild animals and bird species. This is America's second largest forest area, after the Amazon. Its national parks and biological reserves are popular among ecotourism enthusiasts.
The capital city, Asuncion, is located on the Bay of Asuncion. A popular tourist itinerary is the Central Circuit, a route of some 200km (125 miles) that shows some of the country's most important places, including the world famous Iguazu and Monday waterfalls lying near Paraguay's fastest developing town, Ciudad del Este on the Brazilian border. Paraguay's university, founded in 1775, is in San Lorenzo.
There are a good number of bars, casinos, discotheques and parrilladas or open-air restaurants offering by far the best atmosphere, especially in Asuncion. There are also casinos in the border towns of Ciudad del Este and Encarnacion.
Paraguayan people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is Spanish. The country has a subtropical climate. Local specialties include chipas (maize bread flavoured with egg and cheese) and palmitos (palm hearts). Paraguay's currency is the Guarani.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Paraguay: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 595.
