OVERVIEW
Situated southeast of Puerto Rico, the island of Montserrat is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
Due to volcanic outbreaks along the coast, most of the capital, Plymouth, has been destroyed, leaving many tourist attractions off-limits, including the 18th-century Old Fort on St George's Hill (300m (1000ft) above the town. However, there are some wonderful beaches in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
A white (coral) sand beach can be found in Rendezvous Bay; sand in the other bays may be grey or black, being of volcanic origin. Several bays provide visitors with fantastic opportunities for snorkelling and a diversity of watersports; others are totally undeveloped, excellent for those who enjoy seeing nature untouched. The island's only breeding colony of the spectacular Frigate birds can be admired at Pelican Point on the east coast.
Unfortunately, most of the southern part of the island is unreachable, due to the continuing eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano. There are helicopter trips organised to enjoy this magnificent atypical view. There are also a few interesting places to visit in the lush interior of the northern part of the island.
Montserratian people are mainly Christian and their official language is English. The country has a subtropical climate. Montserrat's currency is the East Caribbean Dollar.
