OVERVIEW
Covering one-third of the island of Hispaniola, Haiti boasts a unique culture and enchanting landscapes.
Port-au-Prince is Haiti's bustling capital city. Interesting sites include the busy Iron Market, the two cathedrals, the Museum of Haitian Art, the Statue of the Unknown Slave, the Gingerbread Houses and the Defly Mansion. Petionville, a hillside suburb, offers a peaceful pause and some of the city's best dining, gallery-hopping and nightlife. To obtain a panoramic view over Port-au-Prince and the Gulf of Gonave, visitors should head for the suburb of Boutillier, high in the mountains.
Cap-Haitien, settled at the foot of green mountains and surrounded by several beautiful beaches, has a more relaxed air than the capital and hosts many fine Spanish-style buildings. Haiti's beautiful Citadelle is an exceptional fortress in the mountains, 40km (25 miles) south of Cap-Haitien, and the nearby ruins of Sans Souci Palace cannot be missed either. Other sites are the village of Milot (site of the palace ruins) and Sans Souci.
Jacmel is an elegant town of Victorian stuccoed palaces decorated with filigree balconies. It is an important voodoo centre and there are several fne temples to visit. At Carnival time, you can see dancers in papier mache costumes parading the streets and a group of street theatre performances taking place.
There are also some beaches in this region. The town of Kenscoff, high in the mountains, to the south of the capital, is a favourite summer resort. Parc Macaya is perhaps Haiti's best known national park, offering visitors trails through the most wonderful mountain scenery full of dense rainforest.
Haitian people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official languages are French and Creole. The country has a tropical and semiarid climate. Haiti's currency is the Gourde.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Haiti: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 110 Volts and the country code is 509.
