OVERVIEW
Bordered by Brazil and by Surinam to the west, French Guiana lies on the northeast coast of South America. A belt of flat boggy land (behind which the land rises to higher slopes and plains or savannah) runs along the coast. The interior contains lush equatorial jungle. Off the coast lie the Iles du Salut and Devil's Island.
Cayenne, the capital and main port, is on the island of the same name at the mouth of the Cayenne River. Cayenne provides visitors with beautiful scenery. Sights worth visiting include the Jesuit-built residence of the Prefect in the Place de Grenoble and the Botanical Gardens. The main French Space Centre was built in Kourou. The city is at present dominated by ultra-modern buildings . Tourist attractions include tours of the space centres and bathing or fishing in the Sporting and Aero Club.
French Guianese people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is French. The country has a tropical climate with a dry season (from August to December) and a rainy season (from December to January). Local specialties include bouillon d'aoura, a dish of smoked fish, crab, prawns, vegetables and chicken, served with aoura, the fruit of savana trees. French Guiana's currency is the Euro.
