OVERVIEW
Guatemala is a small country, mountainous and full of vegetation. It boasts magnificent views, a rich indigenous culture, colonial history and archaeological ruins. It is situated at the center of the Mayan culture in Central America with striking Mayan sites spread around the land, including the exceptional ruins of the ancient city of Tikal, deep within the jungle.
There is a strong Spanish legacy, most clearly seen in the beautiful city of Antigua with its cobbled streets, big squares, graceful fountains, and volcanoes as a peculiar background. Both the traditional and the modern coexist in Guatemala, each following their own way in this country coloured by a colonial past.
Scattered in the middle of the awesome scenery of smoking volcanoes and magnificent lakes, where archaic customs and traditions still remain despite five centuries of European domination, are the Mayan villages of the highlands. Guatemalan culture can be admired at lively weekly markets, bright traditional clothing and fabulous handicrafts, different languages and colourful religious festivals. A great place that combines amazing landscapes with traditional culture is Lake Atitlan, a beautiful deep lake sorrounded by volcanoes and Mayan villages.
Guatemalan people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is Spanish. The country has a tropical climate. Guatemala's currency is the Quetzal.
