OVERVIEW
Guadeloupe, north of Martinique, is part of the Lesser Antilles. It is made up of two different islands, separated by a narrow seawater channel known as the Riviere Salee.
The eastern island, Grande-Terreis, is full of rolling hills and sugar plantations.
Basse-Terre, to the west is a rough mountainous island, dominated by a volcano, La Soufrieree, which is still alive and full off banana plantations. Tropical forests, impenetrable in many places, cover Guadeloupe's mountains. Fantastic white-sand beaches ring the island. If, by any chance, you happened to feel bored on Guadeloupe, you can possible hop over to really remote islands offshore, including Iles des Saintes and Marie-Galante.
Guadeloupe provides visitors with a taste of France in the tropics. In addition to its Gallic flair and fine Creole cuisine (among the best in the Caribbean), it offers some excellent beaches and mountainous, lush terrain full of gorgeous scenery. You can have a real island experience at small inns where locally prepared food and tranquillity are the specialties.
Guadeloupe people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is French. The country has a warm climate with exceedingly high humidity at times. Guadeloupe's currency is the Euro.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Guadeloupe: the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 590.
