OVERVIEW
Antigua and Barbuda are situated in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Antigua is about 14 miles (23km) long and 11 miles (18km) wide, almost twice the size of Barbuda, the flat coral island 30 miles (48km) due north. Redonda, a small uninhabited island, is alo part of the nation and is at present a nature preserve.
It is one of the Caribbean's favourite tourist destinations, characterized by warm, steady winds, an attractive coastline with safe harbours, and a protective wall of coral reef. Hikers can today find the vast, winding, coastline that used to make Antigua difficult for outsiders to navigate. The coral reefs at present appeal to snorkellers and scuba divers from all over the world. And the fabulous, small neighbouring island of Barbuda - once a scavenger's paradise due to the number of ships wrecked on its reefs - is now home to one of the Caribbean's most famous and prettiest bird sanctuaries.
Antiguan and Barbudan people are mainly Anglican and their official language is English. The islands enjoy a tropical marine climate. Their currency is the East Caribbean Dollar.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Antigua and Barbuda: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 230 Volts and the country code is 268.
