Ecuador is the smallest country in the Andean Highlands situated on the equator. It offers a magnificent bio-diversity, with an extraordinary variety of wildlife, birds and vegetation existing in the contrasts of climatic zones. 

Dramatic changes in landscapes, temperature and altitude can be enjoyed by visitors journeying between Pacific coast beaches and the mosquito-ridden rainforest; to the pretty capital city of Quito surrounded by ice-covered volcanoes; and to colourful markets that give a singular style and warmth to the highlands of the Andes Mountains.

Their geographical environment has also shaped the people, their cultures and traditions. The backbone of the country is the Andean highlands, formed by two mountainous chains and over 30 volcanoes. Between them lies the central highland valley or sierra, the Avenue of the Volcanoes, at about 8,960ft (2,800m) above sea level. This is the center of agricultural activity, and the area where the majority of the population live.

Larger towns like Saquisili and Otavalo get crowded on market days as villagers come to sell their produce and handiwork in a lively and colourful atmosphere of festivity. The sierra is also home to most of the old and historically important cities, including Quito.

Ecuadorian people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is Spanish. The country has a warm and subtropical climate. Ecuador's currency is the US Dollar.
