OVERVIEW
Dominica is located between Guadeloupe, to the north and Martinique, to the south. The capital, Roseau, on the southwest coast, is the main center for visitors.
Among the beautiful views it offers are the volcanic peaks, mountain streams and rivers, thick forests, quiet lakes, fantastic waterfalls, geysers and boiling volcanic pools.
The beaches in Dominica provide visitors with a singular attraction: sands can be both black (volcanic) and golden. The valleys are teemed with orchids and wild subtropical vegetation.
Travelers can arrange jeep safari tours from the hotels and do sports such as scuba diving, sailing and sport fishing. Morne Trois Pitons National Park covers 7000 hectares (17,000 acres) in the south-central part of Dominica. The Boiling Lake, the second-largest actively boiling lake in the world, and the Emerald Pool are main attractions within the park.
Dominican people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is English. Dominica has a rainy season from June to October. Dominican specialties include tee-tee-ree (tiny freshly spawned fish), lambi (conch) and agouti (a rodent). The country's currency is the East Caribbean Dollar.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Dominica: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 220/240 Volts and the country code is 767.
