Bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Panama and Venezuela, Colombia attracts visitors to its beautiful rainforests, impressive mountains, sandy beaches and enchanting cities.
Urban Colombia centres on Bogota, where about 20% of the country's population live. This ancient city was the pre-Columbian capital of the Chibcha Indians and keeps being a blend of ancient and modern: full of Spanish colonial buildings and plazas next to modern skyscrapers.
A major touristic attraction is the Spanish colonial port of Cartagena, with its magnificent walled old town, a medieval wonderland of palaces, monasteries, plazas and overhanging balconies. To the south, are the most important seaside resorts with wonderful beaches and scuba diving.
The equatorial rainforests cover the river valleys, full of spectacular airplants, vines, creepers and brilliant flowers and birds. Los Katios National Park in Choco hosts a big number of species of plants and animals. The country's jungles also hide marvellous archaeological treasures, monuments, tombs and burial mounds at San Augustin and Tierrodentro.
