OVERVIEW
Known as "Green Bursa" because of its gardens and parks, this province is situated in an important fruit growing region on the lower slopes of Uludag (Mount Olympos of Mysia, 2,543 m).
Bursa is renowned for its delicious 'Iskender Kebap', candied chestnuts and peaches. It is also a center of the silk trade and towel manufacturing.
The city has many religious monuments, mosques, tombs (turbes) and baths because it was the the first Ottoman capital. Some of the places worth visiting are the Yesil Mosque (Green Mosque), with its carved marble doorway; the Yesil Tomb "Green Tomb", decorated with turquoise tiles and completing this trio, the Medresse, which houses the Ethnographical Museum. The Yildirim Beyazit Mosque is also very important since it was the first one built in the new Ottoman style as well as the Emir Sultan Mosque. You can also visit the Ulu Mosque built in the Seljuk style, with astonishing calligraphic wall decorations; the Orhan Gazi Mosque; the 'Hisar', and in the park the Mausoleums of Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, and his son Orhan Gazi. Visitors are also drawn to the Muradiye Complex for its mosque and tombs of important characters from the Ottoman era, tiles and charming decorations.
Mineral-rich springs are found in this region making the Turkish baths "hamam" great places for relaxing. The oldest is the Eski Kaplica (Old Spring). The Karamustafa Pasha Baths are famous for having the best hot, mineral waters.
If you are looking for souvenirs, be sure to visit the Covered Bazaar, "Bedesten", or the Koza Han. Although it takes some time to see the city, you will certainly never forget this experience.
