OVERVIEW
Greymouth is the major town on the West Coast. It offers a wide range of exciting activities only minutes from the town centre. You can visit the Art Gallery and the History House and also walk on the flood wall which protects the town from the Grey River.
A perfect place for adventure seekers: you can take a horse trek in the mysterious fantastic rain forest, view Hector dolphins, cormorant nests and fur seals on an Ocean Boat Tour. You can also go on a cave rafting adventure and float through underground streams. Meet the craft people in their own environment and capture the wonderful sunsets from the beach.
For the history inclined, Shantytown, a replica pioneering town, offers an unforgettable experience of early West Coast life. You can ride historical trains, and pan for gold. There are also 30 historic buildings including the local saloon, jail, church, hospital and school.
Accommodation ranges from quality hotels and motels to backpacker hostels. There are also holiday parks, tourist shops and national chain stores. Restaurants, cafes and bars offer tourists a great deal of entertainment. It is also the terminal for the famous Tranz Alpine train from Christchurch and a busy centre for coaches and shuttles that take visitors on tours to other destinations on the West Coast.
