OVERVIEW
Located between the two mountains Kapuzinerberg and Monchsberg and the River Salzach, Salzburg was born in the year 696 when the missionary St. Rubert arrived and founded the Benedictine Monastery of St. Peters. Its organisation was Vatican-like and the city became known as the 'Rome of the North'.
In this city visitors can admire its small alleys, colorful town homes, rich castles and palaces, neat gardens and many churches and monasteries.
Do not miss visiting the Fortress of Hohensalzburg, a 900 year old building which is considered to be the best-preserved Medieval Fortress throughout Europe; and St. Sebastian, the city's most magnificent Gothic church.
Salzburg is also known for being the city of music: it was the home and birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and it helds an annual Festival (Salzburger Festspiele), which offers a variety of operas, concerts and theatre plays, from classical to contemporary styles. If you are interested in learning music or acting, this is an ideal place since there is a wide choice of schools.
