Like most cities of Austria, Linz dates back from Roman times. With the industrialisation of the early 19th century Linz turned into an industrial city, suffering air raids during World War II. In 1966 it became a university city when the Johannes Kepler University was built.
Visitors are attracted to this city because of internationally renowned institutions like the Brucknerhaus and ARS Electronica Center (both of them hold important festivals). In 2003 a spectacular museum was built on the banks of the Danube. Works by artists such as Kokoschka, Schiele, Klimt, Attersee or Hrdlicka can be found in the modern Lentos building.
