OVERVIEW
The city takes its name from the word 'Innsbrucke', which means 'bridge over the river Inn'. The Inn valley has always been very important for its geographical position since Roman times when it became an important military transportation route.
In the 15th century the emperor Maximilian I chose the city to be his new center of administration. In 1665 Empress Maria Theresia built the Triumph Gate and expanded the "Hofburg", the residence of the Habsburgs in Innsbruck.
Andreas Hofer, who managed to free Tyrol from the German and French troops, is considered a national hero and was dedicated a painting, the Rundgemalde, which depicts his fight on the Mount Isle.
Due to its excellent position in the Alps, Innsbruck has become an international center for winter sports including snowboarding and was the host of the Olympic Winter Games twice, in 1964 and 1976.
