OVERVIEW
The second largest city in Austria is the city of Graz, capital of the Styria county situated in the southeast region. Because of its fortified and nearly invulnerable Schlossberg in the city core, Graz has always been a very important strategic point.
The city's architecture include buildings like the Protestant Landhaus, the old University, the Mausoleum and the Minoritenkirche, a Catholic construction. The Counter Reformation succeeded in reducing the number of Protestants in the city.
Some of the most important buildings are the baroque-style Schloss Eggenberg; Uhrturm, a tower with its original 18th century clockwork and a popular first kiss area for many inhabitants; the fortress on the Schlossberg containing the largest collection of early modern weaponry and suits of armour. The Karl-Franzens-University, the city hall and the opera house were built in the 19th century .
Among its cultural events visitors can enjoy the Styriade, an annual exhibition, dedicated to contemporary art, theatre and performances.
