OVERVIEW
Townsville, considered the Capital of North Queensland, is situated on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. It is only 1,359 km north of Brisbane and can be reached by taking the Bruce Highway or flying from Brisbane, which will take no more than 1 hour 40 minutes.
Many colonial buildings with imposing 19th century architecture fill the streets of Townville. A walk through the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, the National Trust Heritage Centre or the Townsville Museum will give visitors an insight into its rich history. The city also prides itself on its strong military tradition with memorial gardens, distinctive stone monuments and heritage buildings: the halls of the Air-force, Military and Maritime Museums.
Townsville and the North Queensland region are also characterized by their magnificent arts and culture such as the Australian Festival of Chamber Music held in July and the regular performances of internationally acclaimed Dance North. Among the many festivals to enjoy are the Townsville Show in July, Palmer St Jazz Festival in August and the Great Tropical Jazz Festival in October.
