OVERVIEW

Ghent is the fourth largest city of Belgium. It has been able to preserve its medieval power while keeping up with the times by having an important harbor which allows vessels to bring their products to the city.

The 'Flanders Technology fair' is regularly held here and the Belgian State University (RUG = Rijksuniversiteit Gent) has also continued to grow, turning Ghent into an important Flemish cultural center.

Ghent is also known for being the flower city. Its begonias and azaleas are sold all over the world. Every 5 years the successful Gentse Floralien (Ghent Flower Show) attracts thousands to the city.

The people of Ghent have earned the nickname Stropke, which is the round part of the rope through which a convict has to stick his head before being hanged. The citizens received this name because of the punishment inflicted by Emperor Charles V in the 16th century as a way of dealing with a rebellion.
